Types Of Wood Floor Finishes

The interest in wood flooring is rapidly increasing. Wood is a natural product that beautifies the home and also cuts down on allergens.

There are three basic types of wood floor finishes:

1. Polyurethane includes oil-based, moisture-cured, and acid-cured finishes. These types of finishes have good durability, but the moisture- and acid-cured finishes can have strong odors. Oil-based urethane finish is the most popular and easy to apply. Water-based urethane has less odor than oil-based, but is typically more expensive.

2. Acrylic Impregnated finishes are the best types of finishes because of their penetration. The color seeps throughout all layers of the wood, making scratches less noticeable. This type of finish has excellent durability, but must be cared for more often than the urethane and wax finishes.

3. Wax finishes have good durability, but cannot be used in areas in which moisture resides. Wax on these floors must be reapplied and buffed on a regular basis, but everyday care is minimal.
