Easy Way To Remove Wallpaper

If you’ve ever had a desire to remove wallpaper but were afraid to get started, don’t fear. Although this job is fairly time-consuming, there are steps you can take to make it easier.

Before you begin, make sure you have a 4-6″ wallboard or putty knife, a perforation tool (sometimes called a scorer), a one-gallon or larger size bucket, and a sponge. You will also need pre-mixed wallpaper remover. The amount depends on the size of the room in which you’re removing the paper. The remover solution will dissolve the old wallpaper adhesive to make removing easier. Your local hardware store should carry all the materials you need for the job at hand.

Once you’re ready to begin, cover your floors with newspapers or a drop cloth. No one said this job was a clean one. Add your wallpaper remover to hot water in the bucket using the mixing instructions on the bottle.

Prepare your wall by using the perforation tool. It will leave tiny holes in the wallpaper, which allow the remover to enter and soften the glue. Prep an area as small or as large as you are willing to start with. I like to work with one-half of each wall at a time. This gives you small goals to work toward.

Once an area is prepped with perforations, use your sponge soaked in remover to wet the wall. You can then use your putty knife to scrape away the paper. Be careful to keep the knife flat against the wall while doing this so you do not damage the wallboard. In more difficult areas, you may need to keep wetting the paper with the remover solution. When the area is free of wallpaper, use your soaked sponge again to remove any excess glue on the walls and baseboards.

Once you’re room is rid of wallpaper, you’re now ready to prep it for decorating. Wallpaper removal is the biggest step. When that part is done, you should be proud of your wonderful accomplishment!
