Moving Day Tips And Advice

Its moving day and you’re cool as a cucumber because you’ve planned ahead. You have read up on information about protecting your goods and moving advice that helped plan your move. That means you can concentrate on the things that need to happen today. Here is a checklist of things that should make the moving process go smoothly.

Old Home

  • Be sure someone is at your old home during the move to answer the moving van foreman’s questions.
  • Have appropriate payment ready for the mover. Most don’t accept personal checks.
  • Record all utility readings.
  • Once your old home is empty, make one last inspection of all the nooks and crannies.
  • Advise the local police department, your real estate agent, and the neighbors that the house is empty.

New Home

  • Put boxes of essentials where you can find them easily. The bathtub is a memorable spot!
  • Keep your written inventory with you to be sure everything has arrived.
  • Check boxes for damage and inform the movers per your contract.
  • Locate and label fuses, gas and water valves, etc.
  • Check smoke detector batteries.
  • Note emergency phone numbers for your new community (and/or program them into your phone).
  • Before unpacking, sweep, dust, and wipe out drawers and cabinets.
  • Set up your family’s bedding, alarm clocks, and bedside lighting now. (If you wait until bedtime you’ll be pooped.)
  • Unpacking bathroom and kitchen basics is best done early in the process.

Once You’re Feeling Settled . . .

  • Register with the department of motor vehicles.
  • Keep up with notifying mail senders of your new address.
  • Transfer your medical and dental records to your new physicians (don’t forget your pet).
  • The local chamber of commerce can help steer you around your new community.

A sense of loss is a normal part of any move, so remember to take care of yourself, too. Keep in touch with family and friends, and try to get involved in activities outside home and work. Forging new ties and maintaining old connections will help keep things in perspective for you.
