How To Label Plants In Your Garden

It seems that there’s always plenty to do in the landscape, and one of the things that we need to do toward the end of summer is label our perennial plants, so that next spring when we’re planting new things, we can remember what we’ve got. Believe it or not, you’ll forget.

And an easy way to do that is to use an ordinary tongue depressor and then write on it with an indelible marker and use that as your plant label.

There are other reasons to have plant labels. For instance, you are probably going to forget the varietal names of your entire collection of hosta lilies. And for me, I do not want a bunch of labels (white plastic or metal) all through my landscape. I want an unobtrusive label.

And a great way to make them is to take an ordinary stick, sharpen it to a point, flatten it off with a sharp knife, and write the name on there. And I turn the name to the inside, so it just looks like a stick, unless you want to turn it around and see what you have.

And the beauty of this is that you can make your stake any length you want. And of course come Halloween, if you make a really heavy-duty stake, you can use it to ward off some of those vampires that will show up.

When Labeling Your Garden:

  • Use an ordinary tongue depressor and write on it with an indelible marker.
  • You may also take an ordinary stick and sharpen it and write the name on it.
  • Make your stakes any length you want.
