Find The Right Job With A Career Self-Assessment
A first step to getting your career right is to look at yourself. Always have in mind that you are responsible for your life and that you need to be, at least in part, responsible for determining the type of job which you have.
When you go for a job, most employers will now look at you as a ‘whole’ person, especially if you can potentially have a long career with them. You need to also do this and understand yourself as a person. Think of the many aspects of that so that each part of your life complements the others. Avoid viewing your life in different compartments, as this will inevitably lead to conflicts between them. To try to assess yourself and what you have to offer.
I suggest that you write this down, using the following as a guide:
- What do I enjoy doing? Why do I enjoy it? Is it the location where I work, the people, the type of work, the level of responsibility etc – try to understand what is important to help you to enjoy your job. Look back on past jobs for reference and learning and talk to other people.
- What skills do I have? What is the evidence of them? You are much more likely to succeed and be good at your job if you are using skills and abilities that come easily to you. There will be some areas in which you do not have natural skill but need to have training and work to develop the aptitude that you need, but these areas should not be the mainstay of your job as they will cause you stress. Skills include qualifications, experience in a particular technology, ability to manage people, aptitude to analyze data, a talent for selling ideas and or products.
- What is my own style and personality – it sounds strange, but you really need to discover what sort of person you are – what values you hold, how you view the world, how you present yourself, how you interact with others, how you look and many more. Remember that your personality is not fixed and you will change as your situation and circumstances change, but you will still be ‘you’ in many respects so find a job that will suit your current personality and the future personality which you will grow into.
If you find that this is an extremely difficult thing to do, ask someone who knows you well for help or use an independent evaluation tool such as a psychometric test.
